​Founded in 1934, The Society of Trial Lawyers is an elite, invitation-only group, which comprises many of Illinois’ top trial lawyers on both the defense and plaintiffs’ sides.  The goals of The Society are to foster and encourage a spirit of loyalty and fraternity among trial lawyers; to maintain the highest ethical standards in the trial of cases; and to promote closer relationships between and among trial lawyers and the judiciary to further their common interests in the jury trial system.

2025 - 2026 Officers

Jill M. Webb
​​President

Jill M. Webb has more than 20 years of record-breaking results representing her clients’ best interests with an unmatched combination of tenacity and empathy. She is a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers, an active member of the American Board of Trial Advocates, and on the Board of Managers of the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association.  She has been recognized as a Top 10 Women Lawyer by Leading Lawyers, one of the Top 100 Illinois Super Lawyers.  Jill has received a Trial Lawyer Excellence Award from the Illinois Jury Verdict Reporter, as well as awards from the Women's Bar Association of Illinois, and Chicago-Kent College of Law.  She is looking forward to serving as President.  ​​

Mark M. Burden​,
​Vice President

Mark M. Burden is a trial lawyer who concentrates his practice on the defense of physicians, hospitals, and allied healthcare practitioners in professional liability lawsuits. Mr. Burden has successfully resolved hundreds of medical negligence cases and has tried to verdict more than 40 cases. The vast majority of his trial practice has involved the defense of medical professionals and health care institutions.

Brian Murphy, ​​
​Secretary

Brian Murphy has been in practice in Illinois since 1989. Initially in practice with an insurance defense firm, Williams & Montgomery, in 1991, Mr. Murphy joined Hofeld and Schaffner. Since that time, he has practiced catastrophic personal injury and wrongful death litigation on behalf of injured persons and their families.
Mr. Murphy is a frequent lecturer and author in all areas of personal injury and wrongful death litigation. For over 10 years, he was a chapter author for the Illinois Trial Lawyer Association Medical Negligence Trial Notebook , concerning the Illinois Medical Negligence Statute of Limitations.

Michael R. Slovis,
​​Treasurer

Since 1995, Mr. Slovis has concentrated his practice in litigation with a specific focus in the areas of medical malpractice, nursing home negligence and civil rights defense. His passion and admiration for the medical profession started at an early age, as his father and both grandfathers were physicians. He has tried over 30 civil cases. He believes that his success in the courtroom rests with his ability to explain complex issues to a jury. Mr. Slovis has worked directly with area hospitals and practice groups to implement risk prevention practices. As part of Mr. Slovis’ general defense litigation practice he continues to represent physicians and nurses in disciplinary and licensing matters before the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation.
